Judith Milberg
Proserpina
Chamber Play
Contemporary Art in the Local History Museum
Judith Milberg’s practice explores the genesis of form and the resonance of hidden origins. This is epitomised by her installation within this historic chamber, titled after the Roman goddess of the underworld, springtime, and fertility. According to myth, much like her Greek counterpart Persephone, Proserpina spends half the year as Queen of the Dead and the other half upon the earth. Her absence leaves the world frozen in winter; her return heralds the bloom of spring. The rebirth of life from the depths serves as the installation's point of departure. From a dark, primordial ground, organic forms emerge, shimmering in gold, green, and copper. These entities strive upwards, branching out to inhabit a space that feels both vital and ensouled. The chamber is transformed into a mythic site of rebirth—a life that exists simultaneously in the celestial and the subterranean.
