Into the Open
Paintings by Peter Angermann
26 June to 20 November 2022
Contrary to the spirit of the times, Peter Angermann began painting plein air in the 1980s. For the sheer joy of the practice, which had fallen out of fashion, he took his easel to country lanes, forest clearings and meadows. This was the beginning of a series of works that continues to this day. Angermann developed his own view of the landscape, sober and affectionate at the same time, which he brings to the canvas in an unmistakable colourfulness. The motifs always have a connection to Angermann's life. He has childhood memories of Lake Starnberg. Therefore, the centrepiece of the exhibition Into the Open is a series of landscape paintings that the artist painted at Lake Starnberg in spring 2022 especially for this presentation.
Peter Angermann was born in 1945 in Rehau, a small town in Upper Franconia, Bavaria. He began painting in the early 1970s, even before his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg and later at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in the class of Josef Beuys. Angermann has been developing his painterly work for half a century. The painter describes his artistic principle with technical seriousness and self-confident simplicity.
